New Coronavirus cases have been on the rise in Seychelles. As of 3rd January, this year, the country recorded a total of 12 new cases. The government has, therefore, tightened its precautionary measures. Such that the two Corona victims who are active transmitters are now in isolation. Contact tracing and testing efforts have been the main activities over the past days in the country. Since Seychelles is a small country, an outbreak of COVID-19 could result in a tremendous impact. Recently about 420 people in the country have Coronavirus. As of now, Seychelles is recording 20 COVID-19 cases daily.
Some of the country’s measures include the closure of schools, restaurants, mobile food vans, suspension of all sporting activities, banning social gatherings, closure of retail shops, etc. However, amid these precautions, the country had experienced an economic plunge. Meanwhile, as governments are endorsing coronavirus Campaigns, Seychelles seems to be at the forefront. The state is actually among the first African states to begin the administration of the Coronavirus vaccine.
Coronavirus Vaccine Campaigns
On Sunday, 10th January 2021, Seychelles started campaigns on the COVID-19 vaccine. This was after Peggy Vidot, the Health Minister, made this announcement to the public.
“The vaccination campaign will start on Sunday with the country’s leaders, so the population will be able to see the leaders setting an example,” Peggy Vidot explained.
During the vaccination process, Wavel Ramkalawan, the President of Seychelles, was among the first people to receive the vaccination. After all the country’s leaders welcomed the immunization, the medical personnel would follow, and then the elderly: Ie, those above 65. And lastly, the rest of the population, i.e., people below 65 years.
Origin of the Vaccine
The vaccine is an invention from China, developed by the public laboratory Sinopharm and the China National Biotec Group. The experts responsible for its innovation were inspired by the outbreak of Coronavirus when it first hit China before spreading to other states. The government of China has promised to supply the African States with the vaccine. As of now, China has provided Seychelles with 50000 doses of the vaccine. Seychelles is now hoping that its nationalists will voluntarily show up for immunization.
Similarly, other African states like Kenya have followed suit in the campaigns. These efforts are because Africa at large is hoping to curb the virus and return to normalcy. A lot has changed amid the pandemic. People have lost jobs, some their lives; generally, the transition is irreversible.
Benefits of Coronavirus Vaccine
Coronavirus can cause severe medical conditions or even lead to death. Therefore, it is essential to get vaccinated amid the pandemic. This could prevent the spread of the virus. Getting immunized can protect one’s body by creating an antibody response, preventing one from contracting the virus.
Vaccination also helps protect vulnerable groups who are highly susceptible to the virus. I.e., when one is vaccinated, they may not contract the virus. Therefore, they cannot infect the people surrounding them. Be it, their parents, grandparents, or even friends. Although several Coronavirus vaccines are on trial, only a few of them have been approved.
