Spring often symbolizes new life, from the New Year to the new plants growing outside. This is many people’s favorite time of year, and surprisingly, it can affect your mood more than you think. Here are some surprising ways that spring affects your psyche.
1. You may feel happier. Some people are affected by SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder. This can cause you to feel more depressed during the winter. However, with the advent of spring, you may start to feel better. Humans respond to light, and therefore, when there’s more light, we’re more active, and people are generally happier when they’re being active. Furthermore, sunlight releases serotonin, a “feel-good” hormone, and since there’s more light, our bodies are producing more serotonin. Spring scents and bird song can also affect our moods.
2. You may feel sexier. Some people call it spring fever, but spring can actually make you feel more attractive. Peter Walschburger, professor emeritus of biopsychology, says “You see more couples out strolling,” and you also dress differently in spring. This wardrobe change can definitely affect how you view yourself and others. Furthermore, by being more active, you may be more interested in a romantic relationship. Either way, this sounds like a good excuse to go clothes shopping.
3. You may be stuffed up. As great as spring can be, unfortunately not everyone feels happy at its start. The pressure changes and seasonal allergies can cause depression and runny noses. If you’re affected negatively by the start of spring, try to surround yourself with positive images and energy. Do things that make you laugh. Finally, talk to your doctor about what you can do for your allergies.
